Two Types of Nose Operation: Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is considered the most common amongst all aesthetic operations. Still, many people mistakenly understand nose job and are sometimes mixed up between rhinoplasty and septoplasty. Even though both surgeries are linked to the nose, septoplasty is exclusively undertaken to fix a defect in a specific area of the nose - the septum.

Goal of the Operation

With regards to purpose, rhinoplasty is done to elevate or scale back the size of the nostrils, raise the nasal tip, or to add contour around the nasal bridge. With that, it is apparent that rhinoplasty handles the majority of the aesthetic purpose of a nose job. Septoplasty on the other hand is done to align a deviated septum, or to mend a bent septum likely because of a vehicle accident or hereditary deficiency. Often, septoplasty is also done to cease continual nosebleeds and to treat septal perforation that is commonly as a consequence of snorting cocaine and various addictive substances.

Surgical Procedure

Even though these methods own distinct objectives, patients for both surgical treatments receive anesthetic agents prior to surgery. Rhinoplasty and septoplasty will also be completed in the exact same setting; an cclinic, or a hospital. It generally requires no more than two hours before the completion of rhinoplasty while septoplasty can be finished in one to one and a half hours.

In rhinoplasty, a little incision is made on the inside area of the nostrils and the columella (when open rhinoplasty is done). A graft that could be derived from the patient’s ear is needed to obtain the desirable form of the nose. A metal or plastic splint will also be required to keep the new form of the nose.

In septoplasty, the surgeon makes a modest cut into the wall of either the left or right area of the nose. The cartilaginous septum is relocated or removed in order to remedy the presenting condition. The mucus membranes are then kept to its regular anatomical placement.

The two surgical types of procedures put the patient at risk for bleeding. To protect yourself from continuous loss of blood, nasal packs are implanted in the nose until bleedingblood loss is managed. It could therefore be needed to respire by using your mouth right after the surgical treatment.

Post-surgical Targets

Right after rhinoplasty, you can promptly go back home for recovery. The same arrangement applies following septoplasty. Common complaints after both treatments include swollen nose and headaches. Nasal packs employed in rhinoplasty are taken after 3 to 5 days; nasal packs used in septoplasty are usually taken 2 days right after the surgical treatment.

Thorough recuperation right after nose reshaping becomes effective within 6 weeks. Wound recovery might be sluggish in rhinoplasty than in septoplasty. The tip of the nose may still be swollen in two weeks after rhinoplasty, and respiration could be uneasy. In septoplasty, inflammation usually goes away a week after surgery and breathing is considerably much better.

From the comparability above, we can conclude that rhinoplasty cater more on the cosmetic improvement whereas septoplasty relates to repairing a medical condition. On the other hand, it is important to note that both surgical treatments do have common challenges and problems. Some of the typical issues to be prepared are continual blood loss, and infection.
