Turnaround King: Keeping The Gym - Grant Cardone Saves A Business
The show Turnaround King begins at a New Jersey Gold's Gym that is struggling to stay open. Grant Cardone will thoroughly analyze and assess this family owned business in order to determine precisely what the problems are, and what are the possible solutions. There may be more at stake than just the family business because they're also in danger of losing the family home in the process.
Grant begins the show by entering the gym incognito - armed with a concealed camera disguised as a button on his suit. He starts noticing problems instantly. As a potential customer, Grant just isn't handled very well, and finds it hard to find a person to take care of him. Youngest son Jon sits behind the counter and is not very attentive. Grant asks questions. "Where is the pool?" Jon points toward an Olympic sized pool off in the distance. Grant notices an empty refrigerator. Asking about the price he's told $10 a month.
Jon explains it is because of the competition. There have been several gyms opening in the vicinity and the Puleos wish to offer the lowest price. Grant leaves the Gym with nothing but a free 7 day pass. There was never any real attempt to sell him on Gym membership or any other product.
The Puleos family thought it would an easy task to run a gym when they first bought the place. They saw other gyms doing well. Now, two and a half years later, they are really struggling to stay open.
Grant sits down together with the Puleos family to talk about what is going wrong. Why are they struggling, and exactly what can they do to correct things, to turn things around and save their business as well as their home? The family mentions the hard competition along with the high franchising fees they must pay for the Gold's name. Their solution to the challenge of completion has thus far been to make an attempt to provide the lowest prices in town.
Grant doesn't agree. Why are they wanting to have the lowest price when they have one of the nicest gyms around?
Staff Debriefing
Grant gathers owners and staff together for a meeting on the gym floor. This is where he reveals his visit while using the hidden camera. Grant plays the tape for all to check out. It isn't a flattering portrait of the right way to treat a client and the owners appear uncomfortable watching this video.
Grant lays out some initial observations: The empty fridge - just looks bad. They don't look like they're performing for the 21st century - they're not using email, cell phone, and other modern tools which is all so crucial to operate a successful business here in 2011.
And perhaps most significantly, they need a step by step process for subscribing a new customer. They didn't even speak about the gym to a prospective customer, they didn't show him around. They didn't even try to sell their product.
Grant asks the owners to exit the room. He needs to talk to the staff alone - they'll be more open. Immediately, various personnel did open up. They had definite opinions on what the issues were. Gross mismanagement. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand has been doing. They need a leader - somebody that will step up and take charge.
At the moment, for these few days anyway, Grant Cardone will have to be that leader.
Grant knows already a very important factor that needs to change immediately. They have the most outstanding facility in the region but they are charging $10 per month. The numbers won't work with that. It ought to be considerably more.
"The staff has more pride in the gym than the owners."
Dinner at the Puleos - The family is frightened about losing the home. Grant tells his personal story of losing his father at a early age and his mother not being able to keep up with the bills alone. Grant now feels invested in the family.
Grant Cardone leads the owners and staff with a tour of their own gym. They had avoided showing him the pool before, he believes, because they are embarrassed about some repair issues like mold and ripped up flooring. Still, he can't believe it took such a long time for them to show him the pool - the showcase of the business. Grant is extremely impressed with the facilities and comments on how someone is going to come in and make it a profitable business. It's definitely something that can be successful.
"No one here is selling anything"
Grant emphasizes the need for selling. As author of the book "Sell To Survive" his philosophy is that selling is critical to the success of any organization. "Nothing happens without sales. No Dream comes true without someone selling that dream. "He talks with all the staff trainers about having regular sales meetings then one of them mentions how they'd like to have a weekly sales meeting. Grant asks him if folks are coming in to work out each day, why would they only have a sales meeting once weekly.
"They are so overwhelmed by what might happen they're no longer looking for solutions anymore."
Grant will offer a business plan. The family members, Jo Jr. especially, are actually slightly skeptical up to now. They haven't bought in to what Grant is offering at this stage. It's the very idea of raising prices that has them particularly hesitant. Grant wants them to raise the price of memberships to $59 per month for a yearly contract, and offer a onetime payment of $690. He arranges a mail out to get people in the door. He stresses that everyone really should be focused on selling memberships.
Grant has everyone sign up for every class the trainers put on at the gym. "Every company has to have firsthand experience with what you're selling" each individual has to know just what the others are doing. Tammy mentions that it is the very first time that anyone within the staff has had one of her classes.
Grant is turning this company back over to the Puleos the next day. He is confident the staff is ready and pumped yet not so sure with regards to the owners. Jon Jr. is the one who's' not on board and Grant is afraid he may back out. He can see the enthusiasm from the employees the next day as potential customers, introduced through the mail out, start to arrive.
Now, even Jo Jr. begins to see the potential and resolves to give it his all. Grant sits and watches as the gym personnel attempt to sign up new members They register one, then another, all for the higher prices Grant has suggested. They even sell a pair of people on year long memberships at $690 apiece.
Jo Jr. is entirely sold - he now has confidence.
Says Grant, "Anyone can sell"
Grant saw them sell with his help, but could they actually do it by themselves? If confidence level is any indication they ought to do just fine. Grant is hoping they go from red ink to black in 30 days.
2 months after the show was filmed, revenue is up by 30%.
Grant Cardone has a new television show on National Geographic Channel called "Turnaround King". Fictional character history Bonnie King The first Arrowette (properly known as Miss Arrowette ) is Bonnie King , a would-be sidekick and general nuisance to Green Arrow . She first appears in World's Finest Comics #113 (November 1960). When Bonnie was a child, her mother Millie put her to archery training, controlling her progress all the time. She turns out to be very good and even goes to the Olympic Games, where she wins a Bronze Medal. Millie, though, had expected a Gold, argued with her daughter over her alleged failure. After that, Bonnie abandoned both home and archery. She never talked to her mother again. Alone in Star City , she eventually becomes inspired by Green Arrow and Speedy and decides to use her skills in a way that counted. She makes a costume for herself and officially becomes Miss Arrowette. She carries trick arrows such as the Powder Puff Arrow. After that, she helps both archers a few times, even when they did not want her to. Bonnie turns out to be too clumsy to become a hero and too vain to wear a mask. Bonnie briefly dates Green Arrow in his civilian identity of Oliver Queen, as shown in Justice League of America #7 (October-November 1961). The adult Bonnie King appears in Young Justice . Adult's or Child's Black Costume Wizard Magician Hat $1.99 Perhaps the most notable wizard in history is Merlin. Legend has it he was born of mortal woman and sired by an incubus, the non-human wellspring from whom he inherits his supernatural powers and abilities. Mark Twain made Merlin the villain in his 1889 novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and J.K. Rowling has also mentioned the name in the Harry Potter series, referring to certain wizards, particularly Albus Dumbledore, as being members of the Order of Merlin. |
