Gifts For Girlfriend: Uniquely Handcarved Jewelry Boxes

Big-sized jewelry boxes that are handmade make great gifts for girlfriend. Popular varieties of such boxes are decorated with veneers and make wonderful gifts. Veneers are of different kinds based on the way they are cut from the wood.

Rotary cut veneers are sliced on a lathe where logs are constantly spinning. Plain sliced veneers are where half of a log is sliced off in parallel layers producing a number of grain variations. In quarter-cut veneers the log’s rings are sliced at a 90 degree angle for a striped grain, and in rift cut veneers at a 15 degree angle to their growth rings for a look known as fletching.

Veneers have a vast history and many different uses associated with it. The late 1600s to 1700s is what is known as the walnut period which saw several veneers being made from walnut trees, laburnum, tulipwood and even olive. These were quite thick and cut on the grain producing a straight effect.

Oystershell veneers were a style introduced in the latter half of 17th century in Holland that made use of the branches of trees. Burr veneers largely of mahogany were used in the period post 1745 in England. There are times when wood gets damaged from processes such as lopping.

This causes malformations on the grain and wafer thin mahogany veneers made of these were extremely popular in the Victorian period. There are several kinds of woods that were used in olden times for veneers, such as Amboyna. This wood is native to the East Indies and was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries for entire surfaces as well as what is known as cross banding.

Beech, also quite famous at the time, came with flecked grains which were in demand in the Georgian period. Woods like Cedar, Cherry, and Chestnut were used for their range in color tones. So much so that Cherry wood was used in American Queen Anne as well as Chippendale furniture back then.

Chestnut was predominantly used in the 18th century French provincial styles of décor. Besides the different kinds of wood used in veneers, there are a number of styles that one can choose from too. Raw wood veneers are made from exotic wood and are available in a range of grains.

These can be used on flat surfaces and both sides of the veneer can be utilized. Once the finish is applied to it however, the wood undergoes a transformation, completely changing its make-up. The most expensive veneers are the backed ones that come reinforced with different materials to increase their strength and flexibility.

In these, the backing material is fixed to one side of the veneer making it flexible enough for use on flat as well as curved surfaces. The least expensive are the rotary veneers because of how easy it is to make them. Shop sawn veneers are made by wood workers who would rather make their own.

Because this is done manually in their workshops the veneers tend to be a little thick. Laminate veneers are a result of many thin layers being put together to make on comprehensive piece. These are flexible and can be used in a number of ways.

In decorative art forms like marquetry, veneers are used in the making of several beautiful products. Taking into consideration their flexibility, they can be used to make anything from large furniture items to delicate cases for jewelry as well. Owning a piece decorated with marquetry with wood veneers can be a truly enriching experience.

Lost Treasures of Louis Comfort Tiffany

Lost Treasures of Louis Comfort Tiffany

$49.95

The works of the Tiffany Studios revolutionized interior design in turn-of-the-century America. All of the company's works-from stained-glass windows to blown-glass vases; lamp shades to inkwells-bore the unique stamp of one man, Louis Comfort Tiffany, who created the Tiffany Studios and supervised every aspect of their production. Many of these official studio pieces are well known today-avidly sought by museums and collectors worldwide. Special ones among them, as well as other lesser known pieces-the "lost" works of Louis Tiffany himself-are, in a real sense, the core of his astonishing achievement. They comprise his personal oeuvre-the objects made from his original designs for exhibition, for private commissions, or for use in Tiffany's own homes. This book reevaluates Tiffany's art in terms of his personal work-including pieces in all the media that attracted him over the course of his prolific career; stained glass, of course, but also mosaics, blown glass, pottery, jewelry, and enamels. Tiffany's pioneering efforts in interior design are covered, as are his easel paintings and his dream of creating a permanent residential retreat for working artists. Hugh F. McKean also provides much intimate insight into Tiffany's personality, his domestic life, his financial dealings, and his unusual philosophy of art. Lavishly illustrated, the book presents a vivid display of Tiffany's wide-ranging aesthetic. The result is a rare portrait of Tiffany the man-and of the prodigious imagination that almost single-handedly transformed the day-to-day image of a nation and an era.
