Jewelry Box for Women Embellished with Marquetry
Most women cherish their jewelry; it wouldn’t matter if the jewelry is expensive, or if it has sentimental value, or just something they picked up as a souvenir from distant places. The same care and attention are equally bestowed on each piece. It comes as no surprise that a jewelry box for women is a welcome gift.
Given the kind of importance that women attach to their jewelry, a handcarved wooden jewelry box would be a good gift for any occasion. It not only keeps the jewelry from being misplaced or getting tarnished, it also helps in organizing it into sets.
And with a jewelry box embellished with some delightful marquetry designs, it would perfectly match the dresser and enhance the overall look of the room. Marquetry is an ancient wood inlay art form that is done with the veneer and burl of some exotic woods to create decorative designs.
Marquetry can be done with just two sheets of veneer, which is the simplest and easiest kind. Or it can be much more intricate and time consuming when more sheets are used. It is common to use the veneers and burls of very exotic and rare kinds of wood from all over the world.
The natural grain pattern and color of different types of wood make the designs more beautiful. Marquetry involves cutting through a stack of thin veneers of different colors and grain patterns with a sharp and fine saw or knife. This results in several pieces of the same design with different colors and grain patterns, that can be arranged to give a totally distinct look on different pieces of work.
For instance, using veneers of Hard Sugar Maple and Holly for cutting out leaves would leave you with a reddish brown leaf and an almost white leaf. These designs can then be placed on any surface to make beautiful patterns. The veins on the leaves are produced by cutting very thin lines into the veneer and filling it up with a mix of sawdust and epoxy.
Interestingly, Holly veneer when finished well, can take on a golden hue as time goes by. This gives the impression of some form of gold inlay and only closer inspection would reveal that it is also a piece of wood!
As the natural color of wood is limited to browns, reds, and in rare cases like the Holly, whites, dyed veneers are used to create more colorful images and patterns. The veneer is infused under pressure with the dye that forces the dye right into the veneer. The veneer is then sanded to get the colored wood that is required.
Marquetry goes back some 3000 years when it was a very long and excruciatingly painstaking process. Exquisite marquetry designs made out of wood and other natural materials have been unearthed at various archaeological excavations . Although this form of art work was predominant in the East, particularly in India, China, Japan, and Persia (Iran), it is said that Egypt was the pioneer in marquetry.
Although the several advances in technology and modern power tools have drastically reduced the time taken by this process, a lot still depends on the skills of the individual artist to produce a beautiful and breathtaking finished product.
