A Few Terms Any Electronics Enthusiast Should Know
There is lots of electronics lingo that many electronics novices may not fully understand. Whether they are parts and components like printed circuit boards and transistors or computer programs like CAD software, you’ll need to understand them to complete your projects.
Below are terms every electronics hobbyist should know:
AC (Alternating Current)
AC is an electrical current that will occasionally reverse direction
CAD Software (Computer-Aided Design)
Software used to build design and prototype schematics for printed circuits and electrical devices. Learn how to use CAD software.
Capacitance
A measure of electrical charge that can be stored on a conductor. Types include disc, electrolytic, etc.
Capacitor
These are used to store electrical charges
Conductor
A low-resistance material that allows for the flow of electrical current
Digital Circuit
Circuit with outputs and inputs of only 2 states: low=0 and high=1. Analog electronics contain systems that have continuously variable signals (proportion of signal to voltage/current)
Diode
A component used in electronics design that will only permit currents to flow in a single direction
DC or Direct Current
An electrical current that only flows in 1 direction
Electronics
The technology and science of applied electricity and electrical theory from basic homemade projects to extensive production of power and transmissions.
Ground
An actual or theoretical connection of a circuit to the earth to prevent contact with dangerous amounts of voltage. In small electronic devices the “ground” is usually a large conductor that serves as a return path for excess voltage.
Insulator
A material of high resistance and poor conductivity that prevents the unwanted spread of current in an electrical system or circuit
ICs or Integrated Circuits
Used to perform some of the functions of large systems, semiconductors are small computer chips or electronic devices consisting of many transistors and resistors.
LED (Light Emitting Diode)
An individual diode that will emit light once current passes through
Ohm’s Law - This law states that the current that passes through a conductor is directly proportional voltage and is inversely proportional to resistance of a given circuit.
Ohm - The unit we use to take a resistance measurement
PCBs (Printed Circuit Board)
In place of wires, conductive materials are printed onto a board to connect each component of that board. Printed circuit boards are commonly used as a place to mount your electrical components. Find some additional printed circuit board information.
Resistance
The electrical friction between an electric current and the material it is flowing through
Resistor
A component used to introduce resistance into a circuit
Schematic
Detailed diagrams of circuits using standard symbols
Semiconductor
Usually made from precious metals, semiconductors are materials of electrical resistance used to create the resistors, transistors and diodes of an IC
Solder
The glue that holds it all together. It actually isn't glue. Its solder, or a highly conductive alloy that is applied to the board to mount any wire or components to the circuit.
Switch
Switches have the job of connecting or disconnecting electrical flow to a circuit.
Transistor
These have the job of amplifying, oscillating, or switching the electrical current flow between two circuit terminals.
Voltage
The measure of difference in electric potential across a material or a between two points in a circuit
Volts
The measurement of voltage is taken in volts
